Chandeliers
The generic term chandelier, although french, and generally taken to mean an arrangement of several lights usually surrounded by multi-faceted droplets of crystal glass to reflect, refract, intensify and spread the light, could otherwise originate from the middle english chaundeler, an occupational name for a maker and seller of candles.
Although the modern english chandler does not exist until the 16th century, the name could also have denoted a person responsible for the lighting arrangements in a large house. |
